No such thing as a good influence

by

“There is no such thing as a good influence, Mr. Gray. All influence is immoral–immoral from the scientific point of view.”

I think that this is both true and untrue. What Lord Henry said about influences what you say, think, and act is true. I do believe that everybody should be able to think on their own and be who they are; however, I also think what we pick up from friends and how we apply it to ourselves defines who we are and what we do. This could be for the better or for the worse. For example, somebody who copies everything that his or her friend does wouldn’t be a very good thing, but it defines them as a person without confidence in who they are and also as a follower. Though I think if you look up to a priest and want to give back to the people like he does, that would be a good influence. I don’t know, I just feel like the quote only picks at the negative connotations of the word “influence”.

I completely agree. Influence comes from everywhere and it is how you apply that influence that determines if it is a good or bad one.
